Third round: Very even at the top
From:
This is the third day of the Faroes Open, and today the players will play two games each with the first starting this morning at 10 am.
After the first round of the day, and the third round in this tournament, there are now no players, who have won all their games. This means, that the competition is very even at the top. where 8 players have 2½ points after the first three rounds. The favorite GM Gawain Jones (2670) had white today against IM Eylon Nakar (2462) in a game that ended in a draw putting both players to 2½ points in the tournament. The other top match of the day was between local hero FM Høgni E. Nielsen (2397) and GM Alon Greenfeld (2496) and that game ended in yet another draw. This gave IM Martin Haubro (2373), who also had 2 points before this morning’s game, a chance to take the lead, but he didn’t have the best of games this morning. He had black against GM Helgi Dam Ziska (2552) and the Faroese grandmaster won the game after just 15 moves putting him up to 2½ points, where he is now among the leaders.
Rødgaard with a big win
There are a few other players, who are also on 2½ points after this morning’s round. GM Vitaly Kunin (2538) is one of them after his win against Torkil Nielsen (2115). Last year’s winner GM Srinath Narayanan (2549) is also one of them after his win against FM Rógvi E. Nielsen (2337). The last one of the leaders after this morning’s third round is another Faroese player. IM John Rødgaard (2319) had a very good game this morning winning with black against GM Normunds Miezis (2468).
Gregersen with good results
Einar Gregersen (1665) has been one of the big surprise in this tournament. In the first round he won against GM Jens Kristiansen (2380). In his second game yesterday, he lost against FM Høgni E. Nielsen (2397). This morning he met yet another strong player. He had black against FM Hans Kristian Simonsen (2150) and again he had a good game getting a draw.
