Eighth round: Granda fighting back

It is now very exciting and even in the top of the Faroes Open with just one round left to play. The eighth round was played today, and for the second day in a row leader IM Srinath Narayanan (2505) just managed to get a draw. Today he had white against GM Miguel Muñoz (2495), who managed to hold on to a draw during a close game.

This opened the door for favorite GM Julio Ernesto Granda Zuniga (2656). With a win today he could join IM Srinath Narayanan (2505) on the top of the standings. Today he had black against Danish GM Allan Stig Rasmussen (2540). For a long time the danish grandmaster looked to have some advantages in the game. However he made a mistake late in the game that GM Julio Ernesto Granda Zuniga (2656) took advantage of. The Peruvian ended up winning the game and with the win joining IM Narayanan (2505) on the top of the table.

 

GM Julio Ernesto Granda Zuniga (2656) will have white against GM Jens Kristiansen (2403) in the last round tomorrow, while IM Srinath Narayanan (2505) will have black against Sjúrdur Thorsteinsson (2191).

 

Of the Faroese players GM Helgi Dam Ziska (2544) is now number three in the standings after he won against IM Martin Haubro (2365). The Faroese grandmaster still hasn’t lost a game in this tournament with three wins and five draws.

 

The last games will be played tomorrow at 2 p.m., where we will also find the winner.
